Day 1

Elevation: 1,640m (5,380 ft) to 2,850m (9,350 ft)
Hiking Distance: 11 km (7 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

After an early breakfast, depart Arusha and drive to the Machame Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. The journey takes approximately two hours, passing through the lush Tanzanian countryside and small villages. Upon arrival at the park entrance, meet your climbing team and complete the necessary registration.

Begin your trek through the dense, green rainforest, where the trail is often damp and rich with wildlife. The towering trees are draped with moss, and the air is filled with the sounds of birds and monkeys, including the black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the branches. The trail gradually ascends as you make your way to Machame Camp, nestled among giant heather trees. Arrive in the late afternoon, settle into camp, and enjoy a warm meal before resting for the night.

Enjoy a well-earned break and lunch at Lava Tower before descending into the lush Barranco Valley. The descent allows your body to adjust to the altitude, improving acclimatization. As you approach Barranco Camp, you will pass through the fascinating “Garden of the Senecios,” where giant groundsel plants and lobelias grow in the valley. Once at the top, the trail winds through a series of ascents and descents, leading you to Karanga Camp. This relatively short day is designed to aid acclimatization, ensuring you are well-prepared for the higher elevations ahead.
